Fare Cinema: Celebrating Italian Cinema at the Italian Summer Film Festival 2024

The ‘Fare Cinema: Italian Summer Film Festival 2024’ is part of the broader ‘Fare Cinema’ initiative, dedicated to promoting Italian cinema and its industry. Organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, the National Association of Film Industries, the Italian Trade Agency, the Luce Institute – Cinecittà, Italian Film Commissions, and the Italian Academy of Cinema – David di Donatello Awards, this festival highlights the best of Italian filmmaking.

This year’s festival, running from June 18th to July 2nd, 2024, showcased ten short films curated by the National Short Film Centre of Turin, representing the most creative and noteworthy works produced in Italy during 2022-2023. Notable titles included ‘Impure,’ ‘Il Panda Minore,’ ‘Barolo is Dead,’ ‘Birdwatching,’ ‘Le Sirene,’ and ‘Zum See.’ Additionally, the festival featured two full-length films from the 2023 Rome Film Festival: ‘Palazzina LAF,’ directed by Michele Riondino, and ‘Cento Domeniche,’ which serves as the festival’s closing film.

The ‘Italian Summer Film Festival’ kicks off an exciting season for Italian cinema at the Italian Embassy Cultural Centre. This fall, the Centre will host a retrospective dedicated to the legendary Marcello Mastroianni, celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth, along with two special events in November 2024 and February 2025.

“We are thrilled to bring the ‘Italian Summer Film Festival’ to India,” said Andrea Anastasio, Director of the Italian Embassy Cultural Centre. “Short films, much like short novels, can tell stories in a very powerful way. This festival presents a kaleidoscopic array of films that highlight the vibrant scene of young Italian filmmakers, tackling themes ranging from coming of age to existential questions, visionary storytelling to the realism of everyday life. It’s a multicolored journey of self-discovery, engaging audiences with both particular and universal narratives.”
