MUMBAI: Thespian Dilip Kumar died at a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday after prolonged illness.
Kumar passed away at Khar-based Hinduja Hospital at 7.30am in the presence of his wife. Saira Banu, treating doctor and cardiologist Dr Nitin Gokhale and a few of the actor’s attendants.
Sources said that the actor had died of cardiorespiratory arrest. He was hospitalised on June 29 with complaints of breathlessness. Nearly a month ago when he was admitted to the same hospital, doctors had carried out a small procedure. To remove fluid from his lungs. Doctors were planning to carry out a few minor procedures this time too but were waiting for his blood pressure to stabilise.
Pulmonologist Dr Jalil Parkar, who has treated him for two decades, said that the breathlessness was an age-related complication. “He was 98-years-old and everything that could be done was done to help him. We were planning to carry on some procedures, but his BP was fluctuating,” Parkar said.
He said a team of doctors was attending to Kumar, including Dr Gokhale, surgeon Dr Jaydeep Palep, urologist Dr Anita Patil and intensivists from the Khar hospital.
Hinduja Hospital Khar was yet to make a statement on Kumar’s passing away.
