Keep Cool in Summer

By Shahnaz Husain

The main problem during summer is how to look and feel cool. Perspiration detracts from the cool feeling and worst of all, can lead to body odour. Actually, perspiration is the body’s natural way of cooling itself.  The skin contains sweat glands, which are distributed all over the body. The glands excrete sweat, which mixes with surface bacteria and decomposes, creating problems of body odour.

Bathing and scrubbing help to clear away germs, dirt and odour. All parts of the body must be washed well, especially the neck, armpits and feet.  These are the areas where germs accumulate and cause body odour. Adding cologne to the bath water helps to leave the body fragrant. Colognes also have a cooling effect. Shower gels containing natural ingredients, like sandalwood, khus (vetiver), rose have a cooling and refreshing effect. Pay special attention to your feet. After washing them well, dry thoroughly and apply talcum powder.

In the hot season, slippers and open sandals are best, as they allow the perspiration to evaporate. It is also best to wear cotton underwear, because they help perspiration evaporate. Loose, light clothing is also much more comfortable during summer.

The use of anti-perspirants and deodorants also help. Most deodorants are also anti-perspirants. A spray, rather than the roll-on deodorants, may be more suitable in summer. Some people find the use of talcum powders quite adequate. Wet tissues and special cleansing pads are also available to freshen up and provide a cool feeling. Keep to light fragrances during summer, rather than heavy concentrated ones. A light cologne or toilet water may be enough. Floral or lemony fragrances are just right in summer.

For your clothes, choose simple lines and pastel colours. Shades of green and lemon have a cooling effect. You can also go for light blue, light pink or mauve. Loose, flowing styles look and feel cool. Materials, like cotton, chiffon, lace and so on look summery and feel comfortable. Cut down on jewelry for hot days. Choose one striking accessory. Long, loose dangling chains or beads are better for summer. Keep your hair simply styled and away from the face. Try to keep the nape of the neck free of hair. Wearing flowers in the hair, can be cool and attractive. Long hair should be put up with the help of clips or ribbons, coordinating them with your clothes.
