Gaurav Gupta makes his Met Gala debut, unveiling “The Melting Flower of Time” in collaboration with the renowned actress, comedian, and author Mindy Kaling. As a trailblazing Indian woman, Mindy’s journey from breaking barriers to conquering diverse cultural landscapes positions her as the quintessential muse. Draped in a custom gown and cape, she exudes timeless grace, effortlessly embodying the theme of ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’.
Couturier, Gaurav Gupta, says “Mindy radiates grace, making her the ideal muse for this design. Just as a flower blooms only once before withering away, this gown embodies the transient yet exquisite essence of style. It’s almost like the gown Mindy is wearing melts away in time, evoking a surreal journey through loops of infinity, as represented by our brand logo.” Inspired by J.G. Ballard’s short story “The Garden of Time,” our creation for Mindy artfully intertwines elements of fleeting beauty and timeless elegance, serving as the muse for the Met Gala 2024.
Drawing from the tale’s imagery, wherein a count and his wife defend themselves with crystal flowers capable of turning back time until they ultimately run out, leaving behind mere stone statues, our ensemble embodies the delicate balance between transience and eternity. The gown, meticulously crafted, features a central bud surrounded by delicate petals, each intricately designed to create the illusion of melting from a fully bloomed flower. The color of her gown, reminiscent of a weathered flower, adds to its allure. These petals, representing the fleeting beauty of nature, softly mimic the cycles of nature as they melt down with time from the gown’s detailed structure. This captures the essence of nature’s transience, mirroring the exceptional craftsmanship of the couturier.
Mindy Kaling, Actress, Author, Producer, says “Wearing Gaurav Gupta at the MET Gala is not just about donning a stunning gown; it’s a way for me to support my roots and give a talented Indian designer the platform he deserves. I remember the first time I saw some of my favorite celebrities like Cardi B and my friend Poorna Jagannathan wearing one of Gaurav Gupta’s
designs, and I was captivated. For me, wearing his creation tonight is a way to honour his artistry on one of the most anticipated nights of the fashion calendar.
I am so impressed with Gaurav’s artful interpretation of this year’s Met Gala theme, intertwining the beauty of a blooming flower with his signature sculptural techniques to evoke the passage of time and cycle of nature. It’s been a surreal experience to work with him and I’m grateful to be wearing such a masterpiece.
Collaborating with Hema Bose, whose Bengali roots resonate with my own heritage, has been incredibly warm and meaningful. It’s not often you get to work with someone whose roots go back to your own upbringing, and I’ve cherished every moment of this collaboration.
I also want to extend my deepest gratitude to Molly Dickson, whose impeccable styling and dedication have brought this entire vision to life, in addition to my incredible glam team Eva Kim and Richard Grant. Without their dedication and artistry, the look would not have been possible.”
