Moxy Downtown Los Angeles & AC Hotel: A New Cultural Hub in the Heart of DTLA

Nestled in the vibrant Downtown Los Angeles, the Moxy Downtown Los Angeles and AC Hotel Downtown Los Angeles officially opened on April 12, 2023, unveiling a stunning 37-story tower. Together, these two hotels boast 727 thoughtfully designed guestrooms and an impressive 12 dining and entertainment venues, including eight by the renowned Houston Hospitality.

Located at the bustling intersection of South Figueroa and Pico streets, directly across from Crypto.com Arena and the Los Angeles Convention Center, the dual-branded hotel offers something for everyone—from business travelers attending conferences to young explorers seeking new adventures. Adding to the allure is Level 8, a dynamic concept from Houston Hospitality that enhances the hotel’s appeal with its eclectic dining and entertainment options.

Lightstone, the developer behind six acclaimed Moxy hotels in New York and South Beach, has brought the first Moxy property to Los Angeles as part of Marriott Bonvoy’s impressive portfolio. Moxy’s lively atmosphere pairs perfectly with the sophisticated, residential vibe of the AC Hotels brand, which originated in Madrid. Moxy caters to guests seeking a spirited stay filled with social and dining choices, while AC Hotel appeals to modern travelers desiring an upscale experience at accessible rates.

Mitchell Hochberg, president of Lightstone, emphasizes that “memorable hospitality means great design combined with a wealth of experiences.” By merging Moxy and AC Hotels, alongside Level 8, they have created an affordable, multifaceted destination that captivates both locals and visitors alike.

Distinctive Designs and Experiences

The architectural marvel is a collaboration between Gensler and Yabu Pushelberg. The hotels feature a unique L-shaped structure, adorned with a colossal 15,000-square-foot live LED screen—making it the largest 3D billboard on the West Coast.

Yabu Pushelberg’s design captures California’s adventurous spirit, evoking the romance of the desert and the iconoclasm of biker culture. The Moxy lobby features an expansive open space, playful design elements, and a retro motorcycle that invite guests to connect and socialize.

The 380 guestrooms at Moxy reflect a balance of style and functionality, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows, distressed leather headboards, and industrial-chic bathrooms that echo the desert landscape. Meanwhile, the AC Hotel’s 347 rooms are designed as serene retreats, offering spacious, inviting spaces that promote relaxation and productivity.

At the sunlit Sky Lobby on the 34th floor of the AC Hotel, guests are treated to breathtaking views of the city and Hollywood Hills. The inviting decor and artistic touches, such as a monumental artwork from Turkish artist Aykut Aydogdu, create a sophisticated ambiance perfect for socializing.

Both hotels appeal to adventurous travelers who appreciate bold design and unique experiences. Glenn Pushelberg, co-founder of Yabu Pushelberg, sums it up: “Moxy and AC are different brands, but both cater to those seeking something beyond the conventional hotel experience.”

Drinking, Dining & Entertainment

At Moxy Downtown LA and AC Hotel Downtown LA, guests can indulge in an impressive array of 12 unique dining and drinking venues that embody the city’s vibrant creative spirit and culinary heritage.

Bar Moxy serves as an energetic hub, inviting modern explorers to enjoy drinks from day to night. The lobby bar and all-day café offer cozy seating for coffee and snacks, while the evening brings crafted cocktails at the stylish snakeskin bar. For a taste of Australia, Bluestone Lane Coffee Shop provides a refreshing caffeine fix with brekkie sandwiches, perfect for fueling co-working sessions.

Elevate your experience at the AC Bar & Lounge, located on the 34th floor, where guests can savor breakfast, dinner, or drinks against a stunning backdrop. The menu features Mediterranean small plates and artisanal cocktails, served in an inviting atmosphere with plush banquettes and a fireside library.

A true gem is La Lo La Rooftop, perched 34 stories high. It showcases Spanish-style tapas and specialty cocktails amidst lush greenery and breathtaking views of the Hollywood Hills. Twinkling bistro lights and heated seating ensure a cozy, intimate setting year-round.

The centerpiece of the food and beverage scene is Level 8, a visionary concept by Houston Hospitality that recently debuted. This expansive 30,000-square-foot venue immerses guests in a multi-sensory experience with innovative dining, live performances, and vibrant entertainment. Begin your culinary journey at Mr. Wanderlust, a globally inspired piano bar, and explore diverse offerings like South American live fire grill Qué Bárbaro and French-Japanese teppanyaki at Maison Kasai. For nightlife, Sinners y Santos offers a speakeasy entrance to a cathedral-inspired nightclub, while Mother of Pearl presents a delightful alfresco oyster and ceviche bar.

Mark and Jonnie Houston, the creators behind Level 8, emphasize the importance of unique experiences. “People seek more than just dinner; they crave memorable discoveries. Our goal is to blend a distinctive concept with great cocktails and entertainment,” they share.

Meetings & Events Space

Embodying Downtown LA’s industrial past and modern urban spirit, Moxy & AC Hotel Downtown LA feature 13,000 square feet of flexible event space. Designed by Basile Studios, the facilities pay homage to a fictional furniture factory and are conveniently located near the Los Angeles Convention Center and Crypto.com Arena.

The Main Events Space, accommodating up to 600 guests, features striking 16-foot steel and frosted glass panels, with customizable LED lighting for varied moods. This versatile space can be divided for different events, from conferences to weddings.

Two adjacent boardrooms, Fig Boardroom and Pico Boardroom, offer sophisticated settings for smaller gatherings. The Fig Boardroom boasts 1960s-era elegance, while the Pico Boardroom mirrors a contemporary art gallery.

For private gatherings, the second-floor Studios at Moxy, overlooking Bar Moxy, provide adaptable spaces with modular furniture, ideal for meetings or celebrations.

“Anticipation fuels the desire for unique experiences,” says Hochberg. “With Moxy, AC Hotels, and Level 8, every encounter promises to be captivating and unforgettable.”

With their dynamic offerings and creative spaces, Moxy Downtown Los Angeles and AC Hotel Downtown Los Angeles are set to redefine the cultural landscape of DTLA.
