A Journey in Dance: ‘Sopaan – The Next Step’ Shines with Anandita Narayanan’s Solo Bharatnatyam Performance
A mesmerizing Bharatnatyam dance performance, “Sopan – The Next Step,” unfolded at the Triveni Kala Sangam auditorium in Delhi, captivating all in attendance. Anandita Narayanan, a dedicated disciple of the esteemed Padma Shri Geeta Chandran, showcased her profound artistry and skill, leaving the audience spellbound. She was joined on stage by a talented ensemble: Guru Geeta Chandran on Nattuvangam, K. Venkateswaran providing vocals, Manohar Balachandirane on Mridangam, Varun Rajasekharan with the Ghatam, and G. Raghavendra Prasad on violin.
Anandita’s journey through classical dance began with a graceful Pushpanjali in Ragam Shree, performed in Adi Talam. This humble offering to Mother Earth, her guru, and the audience set a reverent tone for the evening. The centerpiece of her presentation was a poignant Varnam in Ragam Poorvikalyani, composed by the renowned Dandayudha Pani Pillai. Here, Anandita embodied the Virahotkantitha Nayika, a heroine longing for her beloved Kartikeya. Her expressive portrayal brought the character’s heartache and yearning to life, creating an emotional resonance that lingered in the air.
Transitioning from this deep emotional narrative, Anandita skillfully presented a Padam and a Javali, each exploring different aspects of femininity. In the Padam “Inendu Vachitira,” set in Ragam Surrati, she transformed into the Khandita Nayika, confronting her unfaithful lover, Krishna, with a captivating mix of anger, sarcasm, and wit. This performance beautifully balanced humor and emotion, showcasing her range as a dancer.
Following this, Anandita performed a Javali in Ragam Paras, titled “Smara Sundaranguni,” where she portrayed the Swadheenapatika Nayika, radiating confidence and pride in her relationship. The evening concluded with a vibrant Tillana in Ragam Yamuna Kalyani, set to Thalam Mishra Chapu and composed by Shri Lalgudi G. Jayaraman. This finale celebrated Lord Krishna and highlighted Anandita’s rhythmic precision and exuberance, leaving the audience enchanted.
After the performance, Anandita reflected on her art, stating, “For me, dance is not just an art form; it is my way of life. I feel dance flowing through every part of me; it’s integral to my identity. I can’t imagine my life without it. Presenting ‘Sopan: The Next Step’ has been an incredibly enriching experience. This journey has taught me the value of resilience as I balance my dual passions for dance and design. Though challenging, I’ve learned that perseverance makes it achievable, sharpening my focus and efficiency, especially on demanding days. There’s always more to learn, and that drives my personal growth. I’m committed to nurturing my craft, continually seeking feedback from my mentors, particularly Geeta Akka, and pushing myself further.”
Anandita’s performance was not just a showcase of her talent but a personal journey. The experience of presenting “Sopan: The Next Step” was deeply enriching, allowing her to connect with her passions for both dance and design. This night reminded her of the joy and fulfillment that comes from pursuing her art, inspiring her to keep pushing her boundaries.
