Frequently asked questions answered by Shahnaz Husain

My hair is dry. If I use oil, it looks thin and when it is wet, it smells. Tell me remedies for body odour also.

Apply curd or egg half an hour before shampoo. It gives body to the hair. For a fragrant hair rinse, add the juice of a lemon and half a cup of rose water to a mug of water and use as a last rinse after shampoo. A few drops of Eau de cologne can also be added to a mug of water and used as a last rinse. Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) helps to prevent body odour. Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply under the arms. Leave on for ten minutes and wash off with water. Or, mix a little baking soda with your talcum powder and apply under the arms, or on the feet. Add 2 drops of Tea Tree Oil to two tablespoons of water or rose water. Apply this under the arms with cotton wool.

I have pimples and dark spots on my back. Please tell me home made recipes.

Check if you have dandruff or oily hair. It leads to acne on the back. Apply sandalwood paste on the acne / pimples. Boil neem leaves over a low fire. Cool and strain. Make a paste of the leaves and apply daily on the back. Wash it off with plain water after half an hour. Mix cinnamon (dalchini) powder with a little lemon juice and a few drops of honey into a sticky paste. Apply only on the pimples daily and leave it on for one or two hours. Mix multani mitti with rose water and lemon juice into a paste and apply on the pimple prone areas and dark spots two or three times a week. Wash it off when it dries.

How to use amla, reetha and shikakai for my 9 year old daughter’s hair? Can I use shampoo also?

hair

Amla, reetha and shikakai can be used to wash the hair. Take one handful each of dried reetha, shikakai and amla. Add them to one litre of water and allow them to soak overnight. The next day, simmer the herbs with the water on a low fire, till the water reduces to half the quantity. Do not boil it on a high fire. Allow the mixture to cool and strain it through a clean cloth. Use the liquid to wash your hair. This quantity should be enough for four washes. Keep your home-made hair cleanser in the refrigerator for further use. Make small quantities at a time.
