Frequently asked questions answered by Shahnaz Husain

Q1. I have black hair. I want to highlight my hairs. Will lemon juice highlight it, or will it make my hair grey?

Using lemon on the hair will not highlight the hair. For highlighting black hair, a lighter colour is used – like brown, burgundy, blonde etc. But, first the hair is bleached and then it is coloured, because black hair does not catch colour. Bleaching and then colouring mean more damage to the hair. You can use herbal hair mascara. It is safe and the effect lasts till the next shampoo.

Q2. I am 15 and have small black spots on my face. Are these blackheads? If so, what is the remedy?

If they are slightly raised, they may be blackheads. On pressing a blackhead, a white plug with a black tip comes out. However, blackheads should not be pressed with the nails, as it can lead to pimples and acne. After washing the face in the morning, wipe the blackhead prone areas with an astringent lotion, using cotton wool. Then, make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply the paste on the areas with blackheads daily and wash it off after 5 minutes. Use a facial scrub thrice a week. Apply on the face and rub gently on the skin, using small circular movements. Leave on for 5 minutes and wash off with water. Or, mix oats with egg white and apply on the face twice a week. Wash it off when it dries. You can also try blackhead removal strips.

Q3. I am thin and my face is long. So what kind of hairstyle will suit me?

For a long face, a short hairstyle will suit. It should be cut in steps, giving width to the sides of the face. A light fringe will also help a long face.

Q4. I have hair in the upper lip region. Can you suggest a home remedy to remove them?

Home remedies do not remove facial hair. They are said to lessen facial hair growth if used regularly over a period of time. You may try any of the following remedies for discouraging facial hair growth. Make a thick paste of sugar, lemon juice and water and apply it in the direction of hair growth. Wash off when it dries. Apply it once or twice a week. Apply a paste of turmeric powder and milk and rub this on the skin with a circular motion.
