Frequently asked questions answered by Shahnaz Husain
Q1. I am 17 and I have pimples. Will it disappear when I am older?
A1. You may be having acne, which can spread and cause scars, if not treated in good time. Wash your face with a medicated face wash or cleanser twice a day. Apply astringent lotion. Apply sandalwood paste on the pimples. Medicated lotions and gels are also available. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water. Include fresh fruits, raw salads and sprouts in your daily diet.
Q2. Please tell me how to mix and apply henna.
A2. Take henna powder, according to the length of your hair. Mix 4 teaspoons each of lemon juice and coffee, half-cup yogurt (curd), two eggs (optional), into a paste. If you do not wish to use eggs, add more curd. Divide your hair into sections. Apply the henna paste on each section and wrap it around your head. Repeat this with all the sections, till your hair is totally covered with henna. Leave it on for an hour and wash off. If you have very dry hair, you can add two teaspoons of oil to the paste.
Q3. In your article, I read that sunscreen should have SPF. What is SPF?
A3. The SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It indicates the level of effectiveness of the sunscreen. The SPF is denoted by a number and should be mentioned on the label of a sun block product. If you stay out in the sun for longer durations, you need to apply sunscreen with a high SPF of at least 20 to 25. If your skin is highly sensitive to sun-exposure, you will have to use a product with a higher SPF of 40+.
Q4. My daughter’s hair and scalp have an unpleasant odour. How can this be prevented? She is 16 years old.
A4. You should first consult a dermatologist to find out if there is any scalp problem like a fungal or other infection. The problem may be due to an oily scalp. Wash the hair and scalp daily, using very little of a mild shampoo. Rub the shampoo into the scalp. Then use plenty of plain water to rinse the hair very well. After the shampoo, use a last rinse, by adding the juice of one lemon and a little eau-de-cologne to a mug of water. Weekly henna applications will help. The odour may be replaced by the fragrance of henna.
