Frequently asked questions answered by the pioneer of the Ayurvedic beauty movement
Q1. How can I find out my skin type?
When you wake up in the morning, wipe your face with a tissue, before washing or cleansing it. If the tissue is clean, you have normal to dry skin. If the tissue becomes stained or soiled with grease, you have a normal to oily skin. Use different tissues for different areas, wiping the forehead, nose and chin with one tissue and using another one to wipe the cheeks. This will help to know if you have a combination skin.
Q2. My hair becomes very rough, though I apply oil regularly. What should I do?
You can condition your hair once or twice a week. Mix one teaspoon each of apple cider vinegar and pure glycerin with one egg. Massage the mixture into the scalp. Then wrap the hair in a hot towel for twenty minutes, before washing the hair. Your hair will look shiny and manageable. If you don’t wish to use egg, add one teaspoon of pure almond oil. You can also apply a “leave-on” type of conditioner or hair serum after shampoo.
Q3. I am getting red spots on parts of the body exposed to the sun. Please suggest remedies.
Your skin may be more sensitive to the sun’s UV rays. Apply sunscreen with a high SPF of 40 or 60. Apply it 20 minutes before sun-exposure. If you stay in the sun for long, re-apply the sunscreen. This means that you should carry it with you. You can ask a skin specialist to prescribe ointment for the skin rash, as it may be an allergic reaction. You can also mix a little rose water with sandalwood paste and apply on these areas. Wash off with plain water after 15 minutes.
Q4. What can I use to close the pores after steaming my face? Can I use ice cubes or face pack?
After steaming the face, you can apply a rose-based skin tonic. If your skin is oily, apply astringent lotion, which helps to close the pores. You can also mix rose water with cucumber juice, or the astringent lotion and apply. Cold compress can also be given. Soak cotton wool pads in chilled water or rose water and apply it on the face. This also helps to close the pores. Face masks also help. You can apply the face mask first and then give the cold compress.
