Celebrate Sunscreen Day

By Shahnaz Husain

27 May is the Sunscreen Day so protect your skin and embrace the sunshine safely!

A Needed Screen of Protection!

Sunscreen is the major requisite of any skincare routine irrespective of the skin type. Human skin is always receptive to ultra violet-radiations, it doesn’t matter whether its sunny or cloudy. It is a must to layer up the skin with a good SPF even if there is no plan of stepping out.

Avoiding sunscreen is a salutation for skin concerns like pre-mature ageing, tanning, wrinkles, dull and dehydrated skin.

Sunscreen provides a barrier from UVA and UVB radiations that can cause fatal skin diseases such as skin cancers.

A study by Skin Care Foundation proves that Sunscreen is an essential for age group above 6, itself proves how important it is. Apart from protection, sunscreens also help in improving skin tone.

Though in winters one can use a lower range SPF, but summers demand a higher range SPF, probably higher than 25.

How do different levels of SPF’s work?

SPF 25- It is suitable for indoor purpose, but should be replied in 3 to 4 hours.

SPF 40- Its suitable both for summer and winter, but in summers reapplication needs to frequent than that in winters.

SPF 60- It’s a must in summers, as the UV exposure is straight through. So, its needs to be reapplied every 2 hours. As sweating causes, the product to recede.

Higher levels of SPF’s should be opted for outdoor activities like sports or beach vacations!

Does sunscreen cause skin darkening?

No, Mineral sunscreens that are formulated with natural ingredients, if used consistently result in improving skin texture while protecting the skin. While as chemically infused sunscreen does cause skin darkening.

Should all skin types use same Sunscreen?

Different skin types do require suitable sunscreens such as –

Oily Skin: Gel based sunscreen are good for oily skin as it absorbs excessive oil.

Dry Skin: Cream based sunscreen is good for dry skin as it helps is moisturizing the skin while protecting it.

Combination Skin: Light water-based sunscreens are quite good for this type of skin.
