Everything you should know about the gemstone of April

By Pankaj Khanna, MD & Founder, Gem Selections

Gemstones are closely related to astrology owing to their properties and effect on human chakras and stars. Every month has a specific stone dedicated to it. Just like emeralds, rubies, and amethysts are all birthstones for May, July, and February respectively, similarly diamond is the gemstone for those born in April and hence called the “April birthstone”.

Diamond is amongst one of the most valuable gemstones in the world. This is not just because of its high price value but also for the inherent properties and impact of the gemstone on the lives of individuals. It is known to aid in achieving success and prosperity for those wearing it. Here are few things that everyone must know about it-

  • Symbol of Love: Diamond is most popularly and widely used as a gesture to show love and care. It is a stone that is used in engagement rings as it possesses the inherent vibrant qualities that helps your love to shine and reflect positivity. Also, it is a stone that is known to add grace and piousness to the one wearing it.
  • Diamonds are attached to history: Some of the famous diamonds like the Hope Diamond which was 112 carats and was sold to Louis XIV after which it was stolen during the French Revolution. It was later found and is now kept at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C.Also, the world-renowned Koh-I-Noor, originally found in India, was given to Queen Victoria in 1850. This precious 186-carat diamond was then in the British monarchy and was used to decorate several crowns. However, it is now on display at the Tower of London.
  • 4Cs of Diamond: There are 4 Cs that you must know before buying a diamond i.e., Cut, Clarity, Color and Certificate. While people generally know the first three Cs, they are less aware about certification. Most certificates are provided for treated diamond and not for the purest form of diamond. It is real diamond certificate but not for its purest form. However, it is always advisable to buy diamond which is certified from a known laboratory like the Gems and Jewelry Export Promotion Council which clearly states if the diamond is pure and genuine or not.
  • Diamond is considered highly in Indian mythology:Ancient Hindu scriptures and other ancient civilizations note that diamonds have properties to protect people from harm, especially during war.
  • Symbol of strength and power: Diamond is known for its durability and hardness and hence it is said to possess the properties of strength and power. For those wearing the gemstone it is said to add prosperity and recognition to one’s life

While diamond has so many interesting facts around it, it is also important to be extremely careful before buying a diamond. Often companies sell diamonds that are not in the purest forms at a price same as that of a pure diamond. Hence, if you want to check if the diamond is of the purest form check for proper certification, as mentioned above or buy for any renowned brands that offers proper certification and authenticity.
