India’s Tourism Sector Set for Transformative Growth

Domestic tourism in India is set to grow exponentially, surpassing the nation’s economic growth by 15% over the next five years, according to Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister of Tourism & Culture. Speaking at the BOTT Knowledge Conclave: Tourism@2025 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, the Minister highlighted India’s remarkable progress in establishing itself as a global travel hub.

He shared that investments exceeding ₹6,800 crore have been directed towards destination development, with ₹3,295.76 crore allocated to promoting lesser-known tourism sites. Initiatives such as the e-tourist visa have boosted international travel, and domestic tourism has surged by 95.64%, elevating India’s rank on the Global Travel and Tourism Development Index from 65 to 39.

Shri Shekhawat emphasized a shift from monumental to experiential tourism and highlighted emerging trends in MICE and medical tourism. He noted that under the “Whole of Government” approach by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the tourism sector has seamlessly integrated development and heritage preservation. “Tourism connects cultures and drives economies. With Maha Kumbh preparations underway, we aim to host 45 crore visitors and make tourism a key economic engine,” he said.

Tourism@2025: Shaping the Future of Travel
The conclave witnessed the launch of Tourism@2025, a visionary publication spotlighting global travel trends and India’s role in shaping the future of tourism. Vows & Vacay, a luxury magazine blending wedding and travel themes, was also unveiled during the event.

Mugdha Sinha, Director General of Tourism, emphasized tourism’s transformative potential, stating, “Tourism can boost income, generate massive employment, and unite communities. By aligning our infrastructure with global standards, India will shine even brighter as a global travel destination.”

In-Depth Discussions and Thought Leadership
The conclave featured engaging sessions on inbound tourism and the dynamics of outbound travel. Industry leaders discussed India’s global appeal, sustainable travel, and the rising demand for experiential and luxury tourism. Ankush Nijhawan, Joint Managing Director of TBO.com, delivered a keynote address on India’s unique position in leveraging cultural heritage and modern advancements to attract travelers worldwide.
