Princess Vaishnavi Kumari of Kishangarh creates and curates yet another series of paintings done by her art atelier, Studio Kishangarh that will be showcased at the Main Art Gallery, Bikaner House, New Delhi from 8th December to 12th December 2023. Titled “Kishangarh, a mythical landscape,” it is an ode to the luscious flora and fauna that surrounds the fort and the lake.
The exhibition draws inspiration from the rich history of Kishangarh paintings. The collection is divided into two themes: the first part offers a contemporary representation of temples, palaces, and pleasure gardens, inviting viewers to experience historic architecture through a modern lens. The second part provides an abstract representation of creation and abundance, emphasizing flora and fauna. Each artwork reflects a modern aesthetic within the Studio Kishangarh style, employing traditional miniature painting techniques, materials, and elements.
“Landscapes are a very integral part of the Kishangarh school of miniatures. I have grown up seeing these beautiful Ashoka and Frangipani trees fill the land that flanks the lake and the fort. This series is literally a recreation of that marvel. It is also a contemporary rendition that takes the craft away from traditional iconography, allowing it to fit perfectly into a contemporary home,” said Princess Vaishnavi Kumari.
Founded in 2010 by Princess Vaishnavi Kumari of Kishangarh, Studio Kishangarh strives to revive and promote the traditional art form of miniature paintings. Princess Vaishnavi Kumari, with her background in design and art history, is dedicated to bringing Kishangarh art to a global audience while maintaining the Royal family’s tradition of supporting cultural fields.
Situated in the Kishangarh fort, the studio serves as a unique amalgamation of old aesthetics and techniques with new materials and concepts. Its mission is to preserve miniature painting by providing employment to local artists and artisans, many of whom have a generational connection . Over the past decade, Studio Kishangarh has focused on developing its distinctive style, incorporating traditional techniques into modern works inspired by the royal collection, fort architecture, and devotional poetry.
Miniature paintings in Kishangarh, dating back to the first half of the eighteenth century, are renowned for their distinct style featuring figures and panoramic backgrounds. The art form is characterized by lyrically beautiful works displaying refined draftsmanship and a unique color palette.
