Excerpts from an interaction …

What’s your background as an artist, and how did you get started in the art world?

As a child, the last few pages of all my notebooks would be filled with doodles. I would sketch fantastical characters, my interpretation of events, mythological sequences, and just about anything that caught my fancy. Perhaps, this is where I learned the true power of art as a medium of expression. I would also dabble with portraits and sketches of family members, whenever I could convince one of them to pose for me. However, in the absence of any professional training, art remained a personal passion for several years. It was only a few years back that I mustered the courage to exhibit my works. I was uncertain of the response that my art would receive and had almost braced myself for the harsh critique that might come my way. But destiny had other plans, and my maiden exhibition turned out to be a roaring success. This was probably the glue that bound me to art for eternity.

What is the central theme or concept that inspires your work?

I consider myself a student of life, and my art, much like my writing, is a sum total of my observations, musings, and learnings. My books span across genres like self-help, historical fiction, thrillers, and slice-of-life fiction. This is because I listen to my heart when it comes to choosing the subjects for my writing. Similarly, I paint what I feel like painting at any given moment. I find this unrestrained approach towards my practice extremely liberating.

Can you tell us more about your upcoming art exhibition, “Soulful Sojourn”? What inspired you to create this collection of artworks?

“Soulful Sojourn” will be on display at Gallery-A, AIFACS, New Delhi, from October 13 to October 19, 2023. There will be close to 50 artworks of varying sizes on display, and I intend to be present at the exhibition on all seven days. I look forward to engaging with visitors in discussions around my works, my practice, and art in general.

The exhibition takes connoisseurs on a captivating journey through artworks from three different series. “Building Blocks,” the first series, is a collection of landscapes depicting varied topographies and geographical features. From Indian cities to international destinations, and from urban centers to rural backdrops, the artworks transport onlookers to a place they have once seen, now etched in some distant crevice of their memory, all without the use of explicit cues or tell-tale structures. The series, “Code Un-code,” is centered around human connections and their underlying emotions. Vibrant colors and bold images have been used to tell human stories with each artwork. From the need to find joy in the little things that surround us to a very contextual take on the impact of technology on our lives, these artworks are unique in their choice of subject as well as treatment. “Nature Mélange,” the third series, is a quirky take on one of the most harmless and aesthetic offerings of nature – flowers.

I invite all art enthusiasts to join me on this creative journey and explore the rich tapestry of emotions and experiences embedded in each artwork. It’s an opportunity to engage, discuss, and immerse oneself in the world of art.

Please share the details of the exhibition Soulful Sojourn and what visitors can expect when they attend?

The “Soulful Sojourn” exhibition will be held at Gallery-A, AIFACS, New Delhi, from October 13th to October 19th, 2023. As mentioned earlier, I will be present at the exhibition throughout its duration to engage with visitors, discuss my works, and share insights into the art world. Visitors can expect to see a diverse collection of artworks, each offering a unique perspective and emotional resonance. The artworks in the three series, “Building Blocks,” “Code Un-code,” and “Nature Mélange,” cover a broad spectrum of themes and emotions, ensuring a thought-provoking and visually engaging experience. This exhibition is an opportunity for art enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the world of creativity and explore the intricate layers of human connections, emotions, and nature’s beauty through my artwork.

Building Blocks, the first series, is a collection of landscapes depicting varied topographies and geographical features. From Indian cities to international destinations, and from urban canters to rural backdrops, the artworks transport onlookers to a place they have once seen, and which now remains etched in some distant crevice of their memory. And Anurag achieves this feat without resorting to explicit cues or tell-tale structures. The series, Code Un-code, is based around human connections and their underlying emotions. The artist uses vibrant colors and bold images to tell human stories with each artwork. From the need to find joy in the little things that surround us, to a very contextual take on the impact of technology on our lives, these artworks are unique in their choice of subject as well as treatment. Nature Mélange, the third series is a quirky take on one of the most harmless and aesthetic offerings of nature – flowers.

Soulful Sojourn will be on display from 13 to 19 October 2023 at Gallery-A, All India Fine Arts & Crafts Society (AIFACS)- Rafi Marg, New Delhi
