The Brooklyn Museum announces Public Programs

The Brooklyn Museum announces its lineup of July programming, including an Africa Fashion–themed First Saturday, Jazz in the Garden, and an Artist’s Eye conversation with photographer Jamel Shabazz. Additional programs include classes, tours, and special events that amplify the Museum’s exhibitions and collections, serve the surrounding community, and support learning through the visual arts.

Museum Members enjoy complimentary or discounted tickets and early access to public programs. Highlights of the full schedule are as follows: 

First Saturday: Africa Fashion

Saturday, July 1, 5–11 pm

Throughout the Museum

Free; registration required.

Celebrate the opening of Africa Fashion and the installation Sakimatwemtwe: A Century of Reflection on the Arts of Africa, which marks the hundredth anniversary of our watershed exhibition of African artworks. July’s First Saturday features a glamorous lineup of fashion, music, dance, film, shopping, and conversation that honors African heritage. 

Brooklyn Pop-Up Market

Sundays, July 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30, 10:30 am–5:30 pm

Plaza

Free.

Stop by our market to shop one-of-a-kind, handmade items from local artisans. This weekly event features more than twenty vendors offering artwork, jewelry, fashion, home and apothecary goods, and more.

Outdoor Yoga on the Stoop

Saturdays, July 8 and 15, 10–11 am

Plaza

Tickets are $16 and include Museum general admission.

Meet us on the plaza steps for a morning of yoga and meditation, open to all levels and led by local instructors. Open your hips and your heart in this gentle flow class, followed by a guided meditation to start off your weekend.

Art-Making: Summer Print Jam

Saturday, July 8, 1–4 pm

Steinberg Family Sculpture Garden, 1st Floor

Free with Museum admission.

In this workshop inspired by Africa Fashion, create a unique pattern through cyanotype printmaking. Then, make a bag using traditional patterns of bògòlanfini—a cotton or wool cloth dyed with fermented mud—to tell your own story.

Drink and Draw

Thursday, July 20, 7–9:30 pm

Steinberg Family Sculpture Garden, 1st Floor

Tickets are $35 and include after-hours admission to It’s Pablo-matic, your own Brooklyn Museum tote, and a complimentary drink.

Sip and sketch at our summer series of life drawing classes. In July, experiment with materials in a casual class led by teaching artist Mellasenah Nicole Edwards while listening to a DJ set by Amber Valentine. Also enjoy after-hours access to our special exhibition It’s Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby

Jazz in the Garden: Bertha Hope Quintet

Sunday, July 23, 2–4 pm

Steinberg Family Sculpture Garden, 1st Floor (rain location: Beaux-Arts Court)

Free; registration encouraged.

Swing by the Museum’s backyard Sculpture Garden for performances by some of the city’s best musicians, and enjoy a range of creative styles incorporating blues, jazz, and international sounds. In July, hear one of jazz’s living legends, Bertha Hope, perform with her quintet. 

Intern Convening 2023

Tuesday, July 25, 9 am–4:30 pm

Calling all NYC interns and emerging professionals in the arts! Join Brooklyn Museum interns for a full day of in-person programming and networking opportunities at our third annual Intern Convening.
